“”He has the unique fit to work summer baseball” Alaska League style,” Goldpanners GM Don Dennis said in an e-mail. “The Alaska League is no show league like the Cape Cod has become. It is a down and dirty competition among the cities, and the players get infected with that.” “I am extremely excited that Tim was available to take the position. I felt he was the right guy from the moment the position opened.”

The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks baseball team today announced the appointment of Tim Gloyd, head baseball coach at Yuba College in Marysville, CA, as field manager for the 2007 season.

Gloyd, a Goldpanner from the 1978 season, succeeds Ed Cheff of Lewis-Clark College, who was preparing to enter his sixth season at the helm of the Panners when he decided to step aside in mid-March for personal reasons. Cheff led the Fairbanks club to a national championship and three Alaska League titles in his five years.

The new field manager will bring along Yuba assistant coach Clarence Griego to serve as assistant in Fairbanks while Panner pitching coach Gus Knickrehm will return for his fourth season with the club.

The coaching staff will be rounded out with a couple of player/coaches in assistant pitching coach Andy Torres and assistant coach Matt Vogel. Vogel was the Panners’ shortstop in 2005 and was named Alaska League Player of the Year.

Gloyd began his coaching career in 1980 as an assistant at Pepperdine where he played and earned All-America honors. Gloyd started his playing career at Sacramento City College and was a first round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The new skipper has previous Alaska coaching experience in addition to his major role on the Panners’ 1978 championship team. Gloyd assisted Jim Gaddis with the North Pole Nicks in 1987 when the Nicks won their only Alaska championship. He was slated to be North Pole’s head coach in 1988 but the team folded along with the Anchorage Pilots, Mat-Su Miners, and Anchorage Bucs just before the season began.
