George Horton (81-83) remembers Tony Gwynn as Oregon baseball prepares for his tournament

In February of 2000, George Horton received a commitment from Anthony Gwynn to play for him at Cal State Fullerton. But about a month later, the lure of playing for his dad’s alma mater became too much, and Gwynn signed with San Diego State, where Tony Gwynn would become the coach one year later. “Anthony committed, but then he had second thoughts because Tony was at the end of his playing career and the word was that he would be the San Diego State coach,” Horton said.
